Dungannon Silver
Band was originally formed in 1902, and has grown from strength
to strength ever since. The only interruption was during the war
when band members had to go to battle.
In the early
1920's, clarinets were introduced to the band and it became known
as Dungannon Brass and Reed Band. Until the outbreak of World War
II, this name remained. The band was reformed after this War in
May, 1945, losing all its clarinets and having all the instruments
brass or silver plated. The band then became known as Dungannon
Silver Band which is the name commonly used to date.
On 27th July
1946, Mr. Sidney Bleakley was appointed Assistant Bandmaster. The
following year, in July 1947, he was then appointed Bandmaster and
continued in this role until February 2000.
The band began
to increase in membership and in 1947 they joined the North of Ireland
Band's Association. During the same year they attained fourth place
at the contest for brass bands in Belfast. The band grew in numbers
and popularity, and attained second place in 1948, and first in
1949.
A major achievement
for the band came in 1986 when property was purchased and renovated
for a new band rehersal hall. Over the years membership has increased
significantly. In 1957, membership had risen from 16 to 32 members,
and at this present moment, the band has a total membership of 52
players in the combined Senior and Junior bands.
Recently, Dungannon
Silver Band has had the great privilage and honour to be invited
by the Irish Football Association to play the National Anthems at
International and European football matches in Windsor Park, Belfast.
Over the years the band has worked and performed for various charities
and other related events. Also, during the Christmas period the
band plays to the elderly in local nursing homes and hospitals.
This is always very rewarding for the band members as it is nice
to see a smile on the face of the elderly and the enjoyment that
it brings to them.
In March 2000,
Mr. Kenneth McAree was appointed as Conductor. Over this past year
Kenneth has worked extremely hard with the band which is currently
at a rebuilding stage. It is Kenneth's aim to bring the band back
to contesting standard within the next two years.
In January 2001
Kenneth formed a Dungannon Silver Youth Band currently consisting
of 21 players. This band is progressing very well which is very
healthy for the future of any band. They have just recently performed
in the Dungannon Silver Band Centenary Concert, and were extremely
well received.
Dungannon Silver
Band is very proud of its achievements over the past 100 years and
looks forward to providing another 100 years of musical delight.
